What is Spinal Energetics? A bridge between Science and Soul

There are modalities that are easy to explain and difficult to experience, and there are modalities that are easy to experience and difficult to explain. Spinal Energetics tends to fall into the second category, which is both its challenge and, in a certain sense, its integrity. Because what happens in a session touches dimensions of human experience that our usual explanatory frameworks, whether medical, psychological, or spiritual, were not entirely designed to hold.
This is an attempt to bridge that gap. Not to reduce the work to something it isn't, but to offer enough of a map that the curious mind can find its way to the door.
Where it comes from
Spinal Energetics was developed by Dr. Sarah Jane to work with the spine and nervous system as an integrated energetic and biological system. It draws from a wide confluence of sources: chiropractic and osteopathic understanding of the spine, the neuroscience of trauma and nervous system regulation, yogic and Tantric models of the subtle body and its energy centres, and the broader field of somatic inquiry that has been mapping the relationship between body, emotion, and consciousness for several decades.
What distinguishes it is not simply the combination of these influences but the underlying philosophy: that the body is not a problem to be fixed but an intelligent system to be listened to, and that the spine in particular holds both the imprint of our accumulated experience and the latent capacity for its own reorganisation and healing.

What actually happens
In a session, the practitioner works with the spine and the energy field around it, using light touch or working just off the body entirely. What follows is different for everyone, and that is not a vague disclaimer but an accurate description of what it means to work with a system that has its own intelligence and its own priorities. Some people move spontaneously, the body finding expressions of release or reorganisation that the conscious mind did not plan or direct. Some people drop into profound stillness. Some people encounter emotion that had been held below the threshold of awareness. Some people simply feel, perhaps for the first time in a long time, what it is like to inhabit their body without the chronic background noise of tension and guardedness.
What is consistent is not the form but the direction: toward greater coherence, greater ease, greater access to the full range of what a human nervous system is capable of experiencing when it is no longer spending most of its resources on protection.
The science underneath
The nervous system is not a fixed structure. It is a plastic, adaptive, experience-dependent system that is capable of genuine reorganisation throughout the lifespan, a capacity neuroscience refers to as neuroplasticity. The conditions that support this reorganisation are not complicated in principle, though they can be difficult to create: safety, presence, the right quality of attention, and an invitation for the system to do what it already knows how to do.
What chronic stress, trauma, and accumulated life experience tend to do is interrupt this natural self-correcting capacity. The nervous system gets stuck in patterns that were adaptive in their original context and become limiting in a different one. Spinal Energetics creates the conditions in which these patterns can begin to shift, not because something is being imposed on the system from the outside, but because the system's own intelligence is being invited to complete what it started.
The wisdom underneath the science
Alongside this neurological understanding runs something older and, depending on your framework, equally or more fundamental. Virtually every sophisticated contemplative tradition that has engaged seriously with the body, from the Tantric schools of Kashmir Shaivism to the Taoist internal arts to the subtle body maps of classical yoga, has located the spine at the centre of its understanding of how consciousness moves through physical form. The channel running along the spine is understood not merely as a conduit for nerve signals but as the primary pathway through which awareness itself develops and awakens.
Spinal Energetics holds both frameworks, the scientific and the contemplative, not as competing explanations but as different languages describing the same territory from different angles.
The invitation
You do not need to understand all of this before you walk into a session. You do not need to believe in energy or subscribe to any particular model of consciousness or healing. What helps is a genuine curiosity about your own experience, a willingness to slow down and actually feel what is happening in your body, and some openness to the possibility that your nervous system, given the right conditions, knows more about what you need than your thinking mind does.
The map is useful. But the territory is where the real work happens.
